Iggesund Paperboard (Workington) Limited

Situated in Workington, Cumbria, the Iggesund site produces high quality paperboard which is used in the packaging and graphics industries.

Large quantities of steam are required and when it was time to replace their existing boilers, CHP technology was selected primarily because of its high efficiency.

Construction began in the summer of 1995 with full commercial operation commencing at the beginning of 1997.

The CHP scheme consists of a single LM6000 gas turbine with a supplementary and auxiliary fired heat recovery boiler and steam turbine. Part of an existing steam turbine was also extended and upgraded prior to integration with the new equipment. The facility is fuelled by natural gas but distillate is used as a backup fuel during any interruption to the gas supply.

The gas turbine generates approximately 42MW of electricity and the steam turbine produces 7MW totalling 49MW, some of which is exported to the grid. The single waste heat boiler produces 105 tonnes per hour of low and medium pressure steam which is used in the manufacturing process.
