Wind
With the UK being the windiest country in Europe we are well placed to take advantage of this natural resource. Wind energy is regarded as one of our most promising renewable energy technologies - it's a relatively mature industry and is long established as a viable option for UK power generation.
We're committed to the development of wind farms, both onshore and offshore and have a significant number of projects in various stages of development.
We completed the repowering of Great Eppleton wind farm, in County Durham in March 2010 and our third offshore wind farm, Robin Rigg, located in the Solway Firth in April 2010. This 180MW site is one of the largest offshore wind farms in the UK and the first in Scottish waters.
We're building the first 630MW phase of the London Array offshore wind farm with our partners Dong Energy and Masdar. Once the full 1,000MW project is built, this will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world and could supply the electricity needs of around 750,000 homes each year. Construction of the onshore substation commenced in July 2009 and offshore construction will begin early 2011.
We've recently completed construction of Haswell Moor - an onshore site near Easington and Butterwick Moor in Sedgefield is very close to completion. We also have a further two in Scotland that are under construction - Camster in the Highlands and Rosehall in Sutherland.
