The £7m wind farm took a year to construct and was commissioned in March 2002. It followed a planning process that involved a public inquiry before consent was given.

At full output, the seven turbines at Out Newton can power over 150000 60W light bulbs, whilst saving 10283 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 105 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 35 tonnes of oxides of nitrogen annually.

Community Benefit

E.ON Renewables has supported a range of projects in communities local to the wind farm, from a local children's playground to a bird watching event. Out Newton has also proved popular as a film location and has appeared as a backdrop on BBC2's Top Gear programme.

In 2005, residents living to our proposed Aire and Calder Wind Farm, visited Out Newton to show them what an operational wind farm is like close up.

The turbines at Out Newton are named after seven local school children from Easington Primary School.

They took part in a design competition on the theme of renewable energy, the winning prize was to have a turbine named after them.

The turbines are now called Jess, Laura, Jenny, Liam, Callie, Chris and Faith and the winning designs were turned into waterproof labels and attached to the doors at the base of each of the seven turbines.
