Nuclear
We believe that nuclear power has the potential to make an important contribution to meeting the challenges of affordability and security of energy supply for the UK while also tackling the global threat of climate change.
This is why we are playing a leading role in developing the next generation of new nuclear power stations in the UK alongside our ongoing investment in renewables, decentralised energy, cleaner fossil, gas storage and energy efficiency.
E.ON and RWE
We have formed a joint venture (JV) with RWE npower to develop new nuclear power stations in the UK. Our current aim is for the JV to be operating its first new power station in the UK by around 2020.
E.ON and RWE already jointly own three nuclear power stations in Germany and have stakes in 17 others around the world. Developing new nuclear plants together will allow the JV to draw from the extensive expertise and support needed to deliver up to 6GW of new UK generation capacity.
Nuclear development in the UK
The UK Government announced in 2008 that it is in "the public interest to allow energy companies the option of investing in new nuclear power stations and that we should therefore take the active steps necessary to facilitate that." We welcomed this decision and are one of a number of companies that intend to pursue nuclear development opportunities in the UK.
Further information on the Government's process for developing new nuclear in the UK, including their strategic siting assessment (SSA) programme that will determine which sites are strategically suitable for development, is available on the Office for Nuclear Development (OND) webpages above.
