Gas
We have 5 power stations that use gas:
- Connah's Quay
- Cottam Development Centre
- Enfield
- Killingholme
- Taylor's Lane
We have both Closed Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGTs) and Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs) in our portfolio.
As a fuel source gas has a number of benefits:
- Gas fired power stations are more efficient than coal fired power stations.
- They produce practically no sulphur dioxide or oxides of nitrogen.
- They produce lower carbon dioxide emissions than coal burning plant.
- They can be started up quickly and can respond flexibly to peaks in electricity demand.
- We believe that gas fired generation will play a key role in achieving a low carbon future.
However, the UK is moving towards being a net importer of gas due to the decline of North Sea gas, and we are becoming increasingly reliant on imported gas and the political sensitivities this brings.
E.ON UK is currently building one of the country's largest underground gas storage facilities at a site in Holford, Cheshire. Gas storage facilities are becoming increasingly important to secure future supplies of gas for our power stations, customers, and for the UK as a whole. The development of Holford Gas Storage is expected to take about four years with the first phase of the storage operational from winter 2008 and the remaining capacity coming online in 2009 and 2010.
