Latest news

12 July 2011

We are currently undertaking preconstruction activities including work relevant to the discharge of anticipated planning conditions, the supply of turbines and construction plans that will be followed during the wind farm build process.

We anticipate undertaking preliminary site works to obtain geotechnical information needed for detailed design work in early 2012.

We will continue to keep the public informed on key matters and activities as we move forward and aim to hold the next meeting of the Community Liaison Group in November 2011.

2009

1 December

We were granted planning consent by South Lanarkshire Council to build Dungavel wind farm, subject to planning conditions.

A planning determination by South Lanarkshire Council is expected in Q4 2009.

2008

Alongside Scottish National Heritage, we've developed an outline habitat management plan that's designed to encourage the area's natural wildlife and improve the area.

2007

We took the decision to remove the turbine closest to the properties at Hamilton Drive from the Dungavel proposal. This follows feedback received on the planning application and discussions with local communities since the application was made.

February 2006

We submitted a planning application for a 14 turbine wind farm. The PDF below contains the Non-Technical Summary of the original planning application.

Why Dungavel?

The site is windy and located about 8km from the nearest town of Strathaven. It lies within a "Potential" area for wind farms as designated by the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Structure Plan and South Lanarkshire Local Plan.

At Dungavel we've designed a turbine layout that minimises any potential visual impact and Scottish Natural Heritage has confirmed that it has no objections to the proposal on landscape and visual grounds.

The positive findings from the environmental surveys that have been carried out indicate that Dungavel is a good choice for a wind farm. The proposal is feasible and capable of satisfying all the constraints from the various interests. For example both South Lanarkshire Council's Roads and Transportation Services (road safety) and Environmental Health (noise) Sections have raised no objections to the proposal.

The Dungavel Wind Farm:

  • Is expected to generate the electricity equivalent to the requirements of around 20,000 households per year*
  • Is expected to save around 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year**
  • Could contribute to the Scottish Government Renewable Energy Targets (31% by 2011, 50% by 2020)
  • Could deliver an estimated £4m local and regional electrical and civil contracts
  • Could provide a community fund of around £60,000 per year over the project's lifetime

Public Consultation

A public exhibition was held in Strathaven in June 2005 for the local community to find out more about the proposal and ask E.ON staff any questions they had about the proposed development.

* Based on an average annual domestic household consumption of 4,700 kWh (Source DECC)

** Based on the Government's long term marginal plant figure of 430g CO2/kWh and capacity factor of 36%
