Why Dungavel?
The site is windy and located about 8km from the nearest town of Strathaven. It lies within a "Potential" area for wind farms as designated by the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Structure Plan and South Lanarkshire Local Plan.
At Dungavel we've designed a turbine layout that minimises any potential visual impact and Scottish Natural Heritage has confirmed that it has no objections to the proposal on landscape and visual grounds.
The positive findings from the environmental surveys that have been carried out indicate that Dungavel is a good choice for a wind farm. The proposal is feasible and capable of satisfying all the constraints from the various interests. For example both South Lanarkshire Council's Roads and Transportation Services (road safety) and Environmental Health (noise) Sections have raised no objections to the proposal.
The Dungavel Wind Farm would:
- Provide around 16,500 homes' annual electricity needs (16% of South Lanarkshire)
- Save carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to taking over 33,000 cars off the road
- Contribute to the Scottish Executive Renewable Energy Targets (18% by 2010, 40% by 2020)
- Reduce reliance on finite and imported energy sources
- Deliver an estimated £4m local and regional electrical and civil contracts
- Provide a community fund over the project's lifetime
Public Consultation
A public exhibition was held in Strathaven in June 2005 for the local community to find out more about the proposal and ask E.ON staff any questions they had about the proposed development.
N.B. The attached PDF contains the Non-Technical Summary of the original Planning Application. Since its initial submission, the proposal has been revised to 13 turbines with the removal of turbine No. 6 from the layout.
