Deucheran Hill was E.ON Renewables' first venture north of the border into Scotland. The wind farm took seven months to construct and was commissioned in December 2001. At the time of construction, its nine 1.75MW turbines were the most powerful in the UK. Each of them can produce enough electricity to boil 875 kettles simultaneously.

The wind farm can generate enough power to supply nearly 9000 households, displacing 17798 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 145 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 48 tonnes of oxides of nitrogen each year.

Transporting the turbine towers and blades was a major exercise due to the size of the components and the remoteness of the site, which is only accessible via forestry tracks. Unusually, the towers had to be manufactured in sections and assembled on site.

Construction also had to be managed around the needs of a special group of inhabitants - the local golden eagle population. Specific measures included the installation of specially-designed perches along the route of the overhead power lines connecting the wind farm with the electricity distribution network. We believe this is a first in the history of UK wind farm construction.
