Biomass

Biomass

Humans have used wood to make fires throughout history, today wood chip and other plant materials can be used to generate electricity in an environmentally friendly way.

We have been co-firing biomass at some of our conventional fossil fuel fired power stations since 2003, reducing overall CO2 emissions in a process known as co-firing.

In January 2006, we began construction of the UK's largest dedicated biomass plant at Steven's Croft near Lockerbie and we are actively seeking to develop further dedicated biomass plants such as the Blackburn Meadows site in Sheffield.

Dedicated biomass schemes offer direct community benefits with the provision of jobs and a new income stream for local farmers from energy crops at a time when there is falling demand for traditional produce.
