Site Statistics

Bessy Bell

Location Newtonstewart, Northern Ireland
Project scope 10 turbines
Turbine height 40m to hub
Total power Up to 5MW

Bessy Bell is our first wind farm development in Northern Ireland. The wind farm began generating in September 1995 and since then has saved around 5650 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the environment each year, as well as 50 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 16 tonnes of oxides of nitrogen.

Bessy Bell generates enough electricity to supply the needs of around 3000 homes.

The site had to be carefully designed because the southern slopes of Bessy Bell mountain are known to contain highly-significant archaeological remains from the Bronze Age. Although the overall area of the wind farm extends to 40 hectares, fewer than four are taken up by the 10 turbines and access tracks. This means the land around the wind turbines retains its original use as grazing for sheep and deer and the archaeological remains are undisturbed.
