Plug in Safely – a guide to using electricity in your home

We all have a multitude of electrical appliances in the home which help to save time and make our lives more comfortable. However, it is important to use them with care and follow safety precautions when using them.

  • Use the correct rated fuse in plugs, and if a fuse blows never replace it with a higher rated one.
  • If the protective covering of a flex becomes frayed, split or worn have it replaced immediately.
  • Sockets used to supply equipment outdoors should be protected by a residual current device (RCD), have a tripping current of 30 milliamps or less.
  • Always look for the BEAB Approved label when buying electrical household appliances. It means the appliance has been type-tested and approved for safety by an independent approval body.
  • Unplug steam irons before filling.
