Tree management

What is tree management?

Whenever trees impact on the human environment they require some form of management. This may be because the tree is thought to be too big and causing shade, it has dead branches or poses some other problem. All aspects of amenity tree management are encompassed within Arboriculture.

What is arboriculture?

The Arboricultural Association define it as:

"the industry and profession which has developed to enhance Britains amenity trees, those which are valued for their colour, shape, cultural, emotional or historic associations, wildlife habitat and so on, not trees grown in forests which are harvested for their timber value."

It can also be described as...the study and care of trees, shrubs and woodlands for amenity purposes, involving planting, pruning, felling, training and education.

When trees are in close proximity to overhead electric lines tree management is required. This is called Utility Arboriculture which can be defined as, 'The maintenance of amenity trees, shrubs and woodlands in such a way as to retain both a valuable amenity and to supply electricity via an overhead network without tree related interruptions'. Unmanaged trees near lines can cause interruptions to supply. Please use the link above for advice on 'what to do if the lights to go out'.
