Mark Corbett

You are now two thirds though the Corporate Management graduate scheme, tell me about the placements you have already completed.

My first role was in the Clean Coal and Nuclear Team within the Energy Wholesale business, helping to develop E.ON's involvement in these new business areas. I then spent four months in Dusseldorf in the Corporate Development department; this was followed by two months in UK Strategy.

Where are you now and what are you doing?

I'm currently working for the Retail business in the hedging and pricing team, looking at the way electricity and gas is purchased in advance. The aim is to buy these resources in a way which best protects the business and customers from changes in the volatile market price of these commodities. This analysis requires bringing together many sources from different parts of the company.

What is the culture like in the department where you work?

I am part of a small team working in an open plan office, which I find leads to a friendly, dynamic atmosphere, where everyone is happy to help.

What do you find most challenging about this scheme?

The major challenge has been refocusing on the Retail business after previously working in Energy Wholesale. Each part of the business has its own pressures, targets, techniques and language. Spending four months in each placement before moving to a new one means adapting quickly.

What skills do you need to do your job well?

Comfort with numbers and attention to detail are a must for the analysis. Equally important is the ability to present information in such a way that it can be understood by colleagues who may not be so familiar with the subject matter.

Tell us about any interesting projects you've been involved in during your time at E.ON.

The first project I worked on looked at capturing the carbon dioxide that was produced by a coal power station and burying it in exhausted oil or gas wells – a really interesting idea. Whilst in Germany I worked on ideas for reducing the carbon emissions of the entire E.ON group.

How do you see your career developing?

In five years time I intend to have worked in at least a couple of areas of E.ON UK and to have gained at least one new qualification in either a foreign language or in business finance. At this time I will be thinking about working in Europe again perhaps for a longer period of time.
