Case study - Saints or Sinners campaign
environmental champions
There are more than 370 environmental champions across our business
Are you a Saint or a Sinner? That was the question posed to their colleagues by our 'Environmental Champions' during 2007.
Our environmental champions project focuses on influencing our employees' behaviours and attitudes towards energy and the environment. We have over 370 active volunteers in place across our whole business. The key focus for our champions during 2007 was the 'Saints or Sinners campaign'. This involved educating their colleagues on issues like energy efficiency, and reducing, reusing and recycling - seeking to reinforce positive behaviours, whilst discouraging unsustainable practices.
We know it has raised employee awareness of environmental issues because we can see the high take- up of recycling at our different sites. The results of our end of year survey showed that we were using less energy per employee, recycling a greater percentage of waste and segregating our waste more effectively to ensure less contamination in our recyclable waste streams. We're now investigating further ways to measure the cultural changes and improvements in awareness through the programme, which will expand its focus in 2008 from energy and waste to include water and wildlife awareness.
