Reducing our environmental impact

Land and biodiversity

"Through our Biodiversity Champions, we share best practice among sites"

We recognise that our use of land and our operational activities can have both direct and indirect impacts on biodiversity. Whilst our commitment to environmental protection is key to our environmental policy, we also have a specific policy for biodiversity to reflect our commitment to protecting vulnerable habitats and species.

In our 2006 report we explained our approach to biodiversity and gave details of some of our significant interactions with biodiversity at our larger landholdings.

Through our Biodiversity Champions, we share best practice amongst sites and business units. This expanded into international co-operation in February 2008 when we welcomed a biodiversity project team from E.ON Nordic, another business in the E.ON Group, to two of our power stations to share our approach and experiences. In 2007 we continued working towards our targets of bringing our existing Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) up to the standard of the Wildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark. Our progress against the targets we set last year and the targets which we are now working towards is detailed in the table below.

Biodiversity Targets

Target Business unit 2007 performance Long-term target
Maintain existing BAPs to a high standard. Monitor for a significant impacts Energy Wholesale and Business Services Existing BAPs maintained to a high standard. Continued monitoring of impacts at other sites identified no significant concerns Implement BAPs to Wildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark standard at all significant landholdings
Maintain and improve biodiversity strategy Central Networks Strategy developed, pending full implementation Maintain and continually improve biodiversity strategy
Develop improved knowledge base and training through research project E.ON UK Biodiversity working group established under the guidance of company Biodiversity Champion. Knowledge base further developed Ensure all sites with significant impacts are covered by Wildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark standard BAP or biodiversity strategy

Our work on developing a strategy for management of our impacts on biodiversity across our wide distribution network is explained further in the following case study.
