Case study - Environment policy and management
'We've now completed an environmental ‘aspects and impacts register and are now carrying out detailed, face-to-face interviews to fully understand the elements of our ‘Environmental Impact’'
Retail Environment Team
Our Environment Policy requires us to have an environmental management system (EMS) which helps us to understand and manage our environmental impact and demonstrate that we are always seeking to improve the way we affect the environment.
This presented our Retail business with a dilemma: how could an EMS relate to dynamics and competitive nature of a diverse commercial operation? In 2006, we undertook an audit to review environmental management across our retail business. Our conclusion was that we needed to develop an ISO 14001 compliant EMS
We've now completed an environmental ‘aspects and impacts register’ and all regulatory and legislative requirements have now been identified and documented. An important aspect of the EMS development is employee environmental awareness. Our ‘Environmental Champions’ helped significantly in increasing personal engagement and local action.
We’re now carrying out detailed, face-to-face interviews to fully understand the elements of our ‘Environmental Impact’ and the potential for improvement.
