Case Study - Distribution Business Biodiversity
We will examine how the activities captured and developed under the first phase can be improved to help enhance biodiversity within our region.
During 2007, we carried out research to determine the best approach for implementing a biodiversity strategy within our distribution business. We wanted to take account of our interaction with the large and varied region in which we operate, rather than merely focusing on our sites. We've now produced a strategy proposal which focuses on a two phase Biodiversity Action Plan.
The first phase in the plan aims to set our standards for legal compliance and information collation on our biodiversity activities. This will establish a baseline and provide a framework for the way in which these activities can be developed to ensure continued compliance with the company's requirements and guidance. Several areas have been recommended for action and senior managers in the business are currently reviewing them.
Phase two of the plan will examine how the activities captured and developed under phase one can be improved to help enhance biodiversity within our region.
Throughout this process, keeping our stakeholders informed has been vital. In 2007, we began consultations with our employees to find out about all the initiatives already under way. We intend to work closely with local biodiversity officers and wildlife groups to take our biodiversity action plan forward.
We also carried out some conservation initiatives at a number of our sites. These involved protecting and, where possible, enhancing the ecological value of our sites, in particular the natural habitats and local species. Wherever appropriate, we have installed hedgehog houses, bat boxes, bird and bug boxes, butterfly boudoirs and log piles.
