E.ON Gas Storage UK
E.ON Gas Storage UK
In 2005 the UK became a net importer of gas for the very first time and our dependence on imported gas continues to increase year on year. Recognising the important role gas storage will play in the future of UK energy, E.ON established a gas storage business here in the UK in 2005; E.ON Gas Storage UK Ltd. (EGS UK).
EGS UK is responsible for securing E.ON’s access to long term gas storage projects in the UK. This includes identifying, developing, constructing and operating a portfolio of gas storage facilities to meet the needs of the E.ON business and the wider UK gas market.
Natural gas storage
EGS UK is currently constructing one of the UK’s most flexible underground gas storage facilities at Holford in Cheshire. With a planned working gas volume of 60 million therms (approx. 160 million cubic metres), this facility will be capable of meeting the typical daily demand of around three million UK homes.
In addition, we have plans to develop a new underground gas storage facility at Whitehill, near Aldbrough in East Yorkshire. This facility could have a working gas volume of 150 million therms (around 400 million cubic metres) and so be capable of meeting the typical daily need of over 7 million UK homes. Whitehill has the potential to be developed as a seasonal or a highly flexible fast-churn storage facility. We are currently in the process of determining the most appropriate design for the future UK gas market needs.
