Case study - Rule One day
"Rule One day: Rule One refers to our guiding health and safety principle – We don’t hurt people. We need everyone, at every level, and from every part of our organisation, to take personal responsibility for the safety and health of themselves."
Rule One refers to our guiding health and safety principal - that we don't hurt anybody. We run a number of initiatives under this theme, one of which is our annual Rule One Day.
The theme of the 2007 Rule One day was our personal responsibility for safety. We provided supporting materials and suggestions for events to allow for each business unit to tailor the day to suit their needs.
The main aim was to communicate the consequences an accident could have on an individual's life and their family.
Events included a chance to 'confess your safety sin' where employees could provide details of the things they are doing that they know they shouldn't, to help them understand how this behaviour is a risk to their safety.
We ran a widespread poster campaign demonstrating the consequences of an accident or ill health on an employee's home life, using a range of emotive designs featuring empty football boots or an empty chair in the pub and working the office. We included phone numbers that people could call to hear the story of a person involved in an accident. Sites even had the option of having a crashed car as a graphic illustration of how serious the impact of an accident can be.
