"Our objective was to ingrain safety values to help build a strong safety culture."

With more than 80% of accidents caused by the behaviour of individuals, we have attempted to tackle this issue in the workplace through all line managers and employees (including contractors) carrying out roles linked to safety.

Our objective was to ingrain safety values through raising awareness, recognising and praising safe practice, correcting unsafe behaviour, and using visible leadership to help build a strong safety culture.

We achieved this by observing and assessing safe and unsafe behaviour, and discussing this with employees to look for safer ways of working where appropriate. Importantly, we ensured in each of these cases that we worked closely to engage with people on an individual basis and obtain their agreement to the new working practices.

We believe this has had a very positive effect on our safety culture. During the past year, we've made more than 5,000 observations through 400 different employees, including all our major contractors. This has proved so successful, we're having to upgrade our IT system to analyse all the data!
