"Our vision is to create a 'centre of excellence' for all engineering and technical learning."
We aim to recruit 68 further apprentices in 2008
The energy industry is facing serious skills shortfalls, particularly in engineering and technical disciplines.
During 2007 we carried out a detailed analysis of the likely skills gap and how we might address this problem, bearing in mind that the industry is going to be increasing investment in infrastructure and other key capital projects, such as power station construction.
Our vision is to create a 'centre of excellence' for all engineering and technical learning, as well as the development of new academic qualifications, such as NVQs, in conjunction with external experts. The Engineering Academy’s aim is to meet immediate demands for skilled people whilst also developing the next generation of UK engineers, giving them the hands-on training they need for a range of engineering roles within our business. The Academy provides practical and relevant learning and development from entry level for apprentices through to becoming professional engineers.
As well as our Advanced Apprenticeship programme, the Academy launched a pilot Young Apprenticeship programme in two schools, to encourage their 14 to 16-year-olds to consider a career in the energy industry. We will also give them the opportunity to gain some practical work experience.
