Helping customers with their energy needs

Case Study - Age Concern

"In 2007, we recruited 129 volunteers who carried out 861 home energy checks."

We've been working with Age Concern for a number of years and our Age Concern Energy Services tariff is an essential part of our strategy to support elderly and vulnerable customers. Although available to everyone, it is aimed at the elderly and offers a range of energy efficiency products, including low energy light bulbs, carbon monoxide detectors and an early warning hypothermia thermometer, as well as discounted cavity wall and loft insulation.

A unique aspect of the tariff is the provision of cold weather payments to gas customers with a guaranteed payment of £10 per year - customers over 60 could get more depending on the number of days recorded below freezing between December and February. During 2007, we announced that our cold weather payment for 2008 will be doubled to £20 for everyone over 80, further cementing our commitment to vulnerable customers.

In 2007, we launched EnergyRight. It was piloted in Nottingham, and by the end of the year had been extended to other parts of central and north west England. Volunteers are recruited locally by Age Concern, we help train them in energy efficiency and then they visit older people's homes to offer advice on improving their energy efficiency.

Where appropriate, the people we visit are referred on to our CaringEnergy team, who can provide other services, such as benefits entitlement checks. In 2007, we recruited 129 volunteers who carried out 861 home energy checks.

For the ninth consecutive year, we offered our electric blanket testing and replacement service free of charge to older people, again in partnership with Age Concern. Testing sessions were held in 25 locations. Of the 2,632 blankets seen, 1,717 were deemed unsafe and replaced free of charge.
