2006 Corporate Social Responsibility Report - Environment

Environment

Climate change is the biggest single issue facing our industry.   It's clear that we need to make significant changes to the way we run our business, and we're taking steps to do this.   But we cannot manage this problem on our own - there is a clear role to be played by Government, business and the general public. That's why we're working with the Government on energy policy, and with universities and other partners on developing the new technology that might provide us all with long-term answers.   And we're doing what we can to raise awareness of climate change among our customers and our employees.

We also recognise that the nature of our business means we inevitably have an impact on the environment. Our aim is to manage and reduce this impact as far as possible where we can, wherever we can and improve the character of the surroundings in which we operate.

We have robust Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in place aimed at meeting or exceeding legal requirements and managing our environmental risks.

Our extensive research and development programme ensures that we continually improve our understanding of our environmental impacts, enabling us to continually improve our performance.

We welcome feedback from our stakeholders, because we want to understand their concerns and because we want our employees to be aware of environmental issues, we offer awareness training. We also report on our environmental performance annually, through our corporate social responsibility reporting, allowing our stakeholders to monitor our progress.

Here we describe our work and performance in the following areas:

Further details of the environmental performance of each of our sites is available here and detailed environmental trend data going back to 1990 is available here.
