Case Study - Community consultation

"The donation could turn the plan for a dedicated space for young people aged 12-15 into a reality."

Young people in Cliffe Woods, Rochester (Kent) are celebrating having their own special meeting space following a donation of £5,000 from our Hoo Peninsula fund. The fund was set up specifically to support communities around our Kingsnorth and Grain power stations. In a rural area where there are limited resources, the new shelter is exciting news for local young people - and it's all down to a conversation between a husband and his wife.

Andy Keates, who works at Kingsnorth, happened to mention the Hoo Peninsula funding scheme to his wife, Janet, who is a parish councillor for Cliffe and Cliffe Woods Parish Council. They realised that a donation could turn the plan for a dedicated space for young people aged 12-15 into a reality.

After a successful funding bid, the local kids are now enjoying the shelter, which features lighting and a radio – all powered by solar panels on the roof. They have really made it their own - after all, they designed it themselves - with support from their local youth services. The kids are planning to personalise the space even more with the help of a professional graffiti artist. They had already chosen our red brand colour for the shelter - before they knew about the funding! Open for use in late 2007, the shelter is already a popular fixture in the village.

Match funding has also paid for a set of 5-a-side goal posts to be put up nearby. And the donation has had another positive result: the success of the funding bid has inspired some of the village's young people to apply for Lottery support for other community projects.
