Case Study - Volunteering team creates a new home for woodland wildlife

The efforts of team from Ratcliffe power station are set to bring new life to a reclaimed colliery site in Nottinghamshire.

Thirteen volunteers from the ‘B’ shift team took on the challenge of planting up a new pond at Silverhill Wood. Managed by the Forestry Commission, the site is now popular with visitors and school groups.
The team’s task for the day was to move 700 plants from a well-stocked lower pond to a newly prepared one. As well as attracting wildlife, the new pond will be more appealing to visitors. The volunteers worked hard to dig out the reeds and transfer them to the new pond with the help of wheelbarrows and a pick-up truck.

The team has transformed the site from a simple pond to a future home for wildlife. With each plant growing up to 10 times its original size, the pond will eventually offer a natural, long-lasting habitat to all kinds of birds and water life.

It was good to know that the team’s efforts will make a real difference to the long-term environment and appearance of Silverhill Wood for the benefit of all visitors.
