Air quality

Making your air cleaner

Good air quality is important for the environment and for your health. We take the challenge of air quality seriously which is why we have installed technologies such as Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD)   and Boosted Over Fire Air (BOFA)   in our power stations. We are also closing our old power stations and investing £1 billion in renewable energy   over the next 5 years.

Combating acid rain

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are two key emissions to air which can cause acid rain and health problems. To reduce the amount of NOx in the air we are installing a Boosted Over Fire Air (BOFA) plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station. This process involves burning coal at a lower temperature which reduces the amount of NOx produced.

To reduce Sulphur Dioxide we are using the process Flue Gas Desulphurisation. This process uses limestone slurry to remove SO2 from the flue gas which produces gypsum. The gypsum is then sold to the construction industry. We also burn low sulphur coal which helps reduce emissions of SO2.
