Powergen Corporate Responsibility Report 2001

Kemsley

KemsleyBoth Kemsley plants are owned and operated by Powergen CHP supplying electricity and process steam to paper mills at Kemsley and Sittingbourne in Kent.

Kemsley 1 consists of a 42MWe frame 6 gas turbine, a 38MWe steam turbine and two supplementary-fired waste heat recovery boilers supplying 200MWth of process steam at various temperatures and pressures. NOx abatement is by steam injection to the gas turbine with NOx and CO being monitored continuously.

The plant is fired on natural gas. There are also six standby package boilers, normally fired on gas, which can also be fired on distillate oil, in the event of failure of the gas supply.

The second Kemsley plant, currently under construction, has been designed as an innovative solution to managing the clients' paper-based waste, using it as a fuel.
