Mill Creek

  • Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) coal-fired plant
  • Located in southwestern Louisville on a 509-acre site, the station began commercial operation in 1972. The plant's net summer capacity of 1,480MW makes it LG&E's largest generating station
  • All units are fully scrubbed and equipped with low-NOx burners, meeting the Clean Air Act's Phase II standards for sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions
  • LG&E's first generating station to utilise cooling towers. Mechanical-draft cooling towers are installed on three of its four units to protect the Ohio River's aquatic life
  • Burns 4.1 million tonnes of coal per year. Most coal was delivered in 100-ton railroad hopper cars until 1983, when the Company's first permanent coal-barge unloading facility was constructed at the plant
  • Produces over 650,000 tonnes of gypsum scrubber by-product per year, for use in the manufacture of wallboard for the home construction industry
