2005 Corporate Social Responsibility Report

Community safety

Safe working practices

Whether in the home or on the power distribution network, electricity is designed to be safe. However, every year people across the UK are injured or even killed by coming into contact with live electricity.

Central Networks has robust systems and procedures in place to ensure our operational sites and electrical equipment are secure and not able to cause harm to the public under normal circumstances. In addition we have an extensive programme of awareness and education for key risk groups, focused on the hazards associated with their area of interest.

We offer a free 'Cablesafe' service, which offers advice and support on cable location and safe working practices for individuals or companies who intend to excavate near to cables. Cable plans are distributed if evacuations are planned close to our equipment, and we give free safety advice. We have also run 'avoidance training' courses for companies working round our network, and this programme achieved the October construction award for sharing of good ideas by National Grid.

Despite our best efforts, this year two members of the public died after coming into contact with our network. One man died when he received an electrical shock after touching a truck that made contact with an overhead power line and another as a result of burn injuries sustained while trying to steal electrical equipment that was still connected to the network.

We also have two Power Discovery Trucks that tour schools throughout the Midlands to teach children about electrical safety. During 2005 they visited 170 primary schools, six school safety events and several county shows, reaching approximately 18,000 children. Even more youngsters can access the online Power Discovery Zone, which is linked to the main Central Networks site and which teaches children how to stay safe around electricity.
