Matched Funding

E.ON colleagues presented ex England Rugby Union star Dusty Hare with a cheque for £3,000.

Dusty, who still holds the world record for the most points scored in a Rugby Union career, attended a ceremony at E.ON UK’s Newstead Court site in Nottinghamshire, on 15 November on behalf of rugby charity Wooden Spoon.

The £3,000 was donated by E.ON UK as part of a wider fundraising effort by Tony Jenkin Jones and Jon Devine from the Consumer Change Team who, along with two friends, completed the exhausting Wooden Spoon Four Peaks Challenge during in summer 2006.

From June 29 to July 1 the team climbed 14,000 feet over Ben Nevis in Scotland, Helvellyn in England and Snowdon in Wales, before finishing up in Carantouhill in south west Ireland. They travelled an exhausting 1,900 miles within 44 hours.

Their efforts raised £5,965 which was boosted by E.ON UK’s Matched Funding to a total of £8,965.

On receiving the money Dusty Hare said: ‘It gives me great pleasure to accept this cheque on behalf of Wooden Spoon.

The team worked hard to raise money in the build up to the Four Peaks Challenge and raised almost £9,000. E.ON UK’s generosity supporting this great cause has been amazing. This money will directly affect the lives of disadvantaged young people.’

Wooden Spoon is Rugby Union’s official charity and supports mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people. Since its launch in 1983, the charity has put £10 million into projects across the UK and Ireland.

At a local level Wooden Spoon organises events such as dinners, and an annual golf day.

Tony Jenkin Jones added: 'The idea of climbing four mountains in 48 hours captured the imagination of friends and colleagues and the support we received was fantastic. Several charities do three peaks, but only Wooden Spoon include a fourth.’
