Community power
In addition to our large wind farm development activities, we've also created a business that develops and finances small clusters of wind turbines, usually three or four at a time, which could generate enough electricity to power up to 3,000 homes. As with all of our wind farm developments, we ensure the benefits from renewable energy are shared with both the landowner and the local community. Our aim is to build a strong relationship with the landowner and to engage the local community at an early stage in the project. Through events such as public exhibitions, open days, site visits, media events and press releases we inform local people about the project and give them the opportunity to get involved in the consultation process. The local community also receives a regular income during the lifetime of the wind turbine, as well as energy efficiency advice and products, information about the benefits of clean power and educational materials for local schools.
Our wind cluster business is also developing a unique wind farm project in Wales, which is one of the largest partnerships between a community-owned organisation and the private sector ever seen. The aim for this 10.4MW project at Ferndale is for the wind farm to be owned jointly by ourselves and the Arts Factory, a local community group.
Our wind cluster business also operates in a 'low-carbon' environment and the team continuously monitors its carbon footprint and has set yearly targets for carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reductions. In 2006 all of the team's CO2 emissions were offset by making contributions to an environmental trust that invests in sustainable energy and reforestation projects.
