2006 Corporate Social Responsibility Report - About E.ON UK

About E.ON UK

We are a leading player in the UK energy market, and the largest integrated power and gas business. We are part of the E.ON Group, which has electricity and gas interests in Germany, Central and Eastern Europe, Italy, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, the USA and Russia. In the UK, we are involved in generating and distributing electricity, and trading and retailing electricity, gas and other energy-related products. We employ more than 15,000 people, and last year, had sales in 2006 of £8.6 billion.

The UK energy market has undergone enormous changes since privatisation. During the 1990s, both the electricity and gas markets have been gradually opened up to competition, becoming fully liberalised in 1998, and now both residential and commercial customers can buy gas and electricity from any supplier. There has also been an increasing move towards vertical integration, with energy companies now operating in all areas of the supply chain, from electricity generation to the supply of electricity and gas.

Liberalisation has also extended to the energy connections market and customers can choose which company undertakes work needed before they can be connected to the network. This includes civil works, network design and building, but excludes the final connection to the network, which remains the responsibility of the host distribution network operator.

More detail on the structure and operation of the business is given here. For information about the E.ON Group, click here.
