Powergen Corporate Responsibility Report 2001

Investing in people

We believe that training and development is a lifetime process. We need employees to constantly refresh their skills and expertise so we can remain competitive.

Investor in People

In the UK, we have been committed to the Investor in People (IiP) standard for a number of years. At the start of 2002, all of Powergen’s UK businesses have either achieved IiP recognition, or are actively working towards it.

The IiP accreditation programme in place in the UK is reflected in similar practices in LG&E.

In the UK and the US, we aim to ensure that each employee has a personal development plan and discusses annual goals. This is supported with appropriate training and employees also receive informal feedback on their performance as well as more formal performance reviews.

Performance and personal development

Powergen tries to enable employees to maximise their personal contribution to the business and enjoy a challenging and rewarding role within the Company.

Employee development is an integral part of our business planning process. In accordance with Group HR policy, individuals receive support and guidance to help them achieve their full potential in line with business goals. We aim to ensure that each individual has a personal development plan that is reviewed and updated annually.

Training

The Powergen Group puts great emphasis on training individuals. This is seen as a lifetime process. During 2001, the amount invested in training was:

  • In the UK: £7.7m, which is 3.7% of staff salary costs and £1,389 per person

  • In the US: US $2,400,000 (includes tuition reimbursement); 0.57% of salaries and $622 per employee
