Climate change
Geography
Timing: Half a lesson
Objectives:
- Compare and contrast the effects of climate change on different regions
- Critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of climate change
Assessment:
- Written report for grading or
- A poster
Delivery:
Individually or in small groups – The students can run through the activity on their own or in small groups if there are enough computers.
As a class – You can use this activity with an interactive whiteboard.
This activity compares the affects of climate change on Britain and Argentina.
If you are using the activity with the whole class, you could ask how many extreme weather events they can recall occurring in the UK over the last couple of years: tornadoes, floods or storms. Then remind the group of some world events – New Orleans for example.
Ask for opinions on climate change. Students may think that high temperatures are a good thing, but would they want to be at school when it is 36°C outside? If they live near the coast, they may understand the dangers from rising sea levels.
See if they can come up with any real advantages. One advantage is that farmers may be able to grow a wider variety of crops. However, pests and diseases will be able to survive mild winters.
Now set an activity of your choice, which could be finished for homework. You can use the extra resources available in the online materials.
Here is an internet research trail for your students to follow for the online activity and
