Alpesh Gopal

Jointer Apprentice

Alpesh Gopal, joined E.ON, one of the UK's leading power and gas companies, as an apprentice jointer in September 2007.   "I always wanted a physical career instead of sitting behind the desk, but apprenticeship schemes were not available when I initially looked into the field. I love getting stuck in and getting my hands dirty! Having become an apprentice at my age, I treat this as an investment into my future and it's a small price to pay for doing what you want to do and what you enjoy for the rest of your life", explains Alpesh.

As an apprentice cable jointer, Alpesh conducts restoration and repair works on underground cables to keep everyone on power supply. "We go to locations that are off supply in the Leicestershire area. Firstly we conduct a diagnosis to find out where the fault is, and then we do tests to establish the point of fault and carry out the necessary repairs. One of the most important things is liaising with the customers, as being off supply can be distressing for them", explains Alpesh.

Alpesh has attained several GSCEs and took Electronics and Business Studies to A level standard. He began University but felt it wasn't for him, therefore decided to embark into the world of work. Alpesh now studies at E.ON's Engineering Academy and is in the process of preparing an NVQ portfolio demonstrating what he has learnt on and off site. He will graduate in September 2010.

Alpeshs' advice? "Remember that it's never too late for a career change and for taking a bold step! It's amazing to have a career incorporating skills that you have and allowing you to do what you love doing".
