Thornhill CCGT Power Station

Thornhill Power Station is a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station, based in Ravensthorpe, Dewsbury. Costing £30 million it became operational in November 1998 and supplies electricity to the local electrical grid. It is owned, operated and maintained by E.ON UK CHP.

The station comprises of a gas turbine fuelled by natural gas, a waste heat recovery boiler (WHRB), a steam turbine and a single shaft generator.

Thornhill Power Station

Thornhill is currently operated and maintained by a small operations team, comprising of site supervisor, production coordinator, maintenance coordinator and six operator technicians.

The gas turbine is an LM6000-PB/DLE gas turbine made by General Electric nominally generating 42MW of electrical power. The exhaust gases from the turbine are passed into the boiler where steam is generated at both 4 bar and 44 bar pressure levels. This steam is then sent through the steam turbine producing additional power and then condensed in a surface type condenser which is cooled by means of river water. In total, 50MW of electricity is produced and exported by the plant.

The gas turbine and steam turbine are arranged in a single shaft configuration. Both turbines are connected through reduction gears to the same generator located between them.
