Distribution

Under the Central Networks name, we own and operate the second largest distribution network in the UK, bringing a reliable supply to 4.9 million customers across central England through 133,000km of underground and overhead cables and via almost 97,000 substations.

Central Networks covers an area from the Peak District in the north to the outskirts of Bristol in the south, and from the Welsh Borders in the west to the Lincolnshire Coast in the east.

Investment

A five-year, £1.2bn investment into our network is under way to replace ageing assets and provide our customers with an improved and even more reliable electricity supply.

The Power of Inspiration

We need an extra 600 engineers to help us deliver our investment programme and we are taking a number of innovative steps to ensure we get the right people on board.

Our successful and growing advanced apprenticeship scheme is supported by our specialist training centre in Birmingham, and our pioneering schools engagement programme - plugin2engineering - has been piloted, and is being developed, across central England. We are also involved with the Power Academy - an industry educational scheme, supporting university students during their studies.

Research and Development

Central Networks is committed to Research and Development (R+D) initiatives that will provide benefits to our customers, the electricity industry and shareholders. Our approach to R+D is to identify emerging technologies and opportunities that could increase the efficiency of our operations, enhance overall safety and provide a reliable network that delivers a high quality of supply.
